The End of the World as We Know It

The Breakfast Club meets The War of the Worlds in The End of the World as We Know It, the latest release from Alloy Entertainment (The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, 666 Park Avenue, Gossip Girl)
They wanted to party like it was their last night on earth. They just might get their wish….
Meet the four most unlikely heroes ever:
Teena McAuley: Queen Bee, first-class problem solver, resident heartbreaker.
Leo Starnick: UFO conspirator, pizza delivery boy, all-around slacker.
Evan Brighton: Baseball all-star, extreme virgin, Teena-worshipper.
Sarabeth Lewis: Straight-A student, weekend hermit, enemy of the color pink.
When Teena locks Leo, Evan, and Sarabeth in the basement during her biggest party of the year, she doesn’t plan on getting trapped in the Loser Dungeon herself. She can barely imagine a night with these dweebs—let alone a lifetime. But when an alien invasion destroys their entire Midwestern suburb, it looks like these unlikely friends are the last people on earth. Now, it’s up to them to save the world….

Joint Review:

I think it's safe to say I've never read anything like this. I rarely read alien books and if I do their with the cute not evil aliens. This was nothing like what I'm used too. The aliens were evil, purple gooey things that you have to kill with perfume. I enjoyed this book very much. I liked not knowing what to expect and being surprised.

This had some pretty amazing characters. Leo and Sarabeth were my favorite. But Evan and Tenna came in a close second. I loved how they all really grew together. At first they were just stuck with each other but they ended up good friends. I loved that even in the situation they were in, they still had fun. I loved how different they were from each other but they still merged well together. Each character had their own personality unlike any of the other 3. I loved that their was cuteness and how everyone took their time. These characters had themselves quite the crazy adventure. I really enjoyed each character and I loved reading their crazy adventure.

I haven't seen either of the movies this book was inspired from. So I didn't know what to expect. This had a very awesome storyline. There was so much action and fighting. I loved the aliens. I liked how relatable the characters were. I liked how I never wanted to put this down because I wanted to know what happened. I liked how each character had their own point of view chapters. Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was a super cool read. I loved how unique it was. If you like the breakfast club or aliens this one is for you!

Name an alien movie that came out in the past 30 years or so and I've probably seen it or at least heard of it. My family is pretty big on alien movies so I've seen quite a few in my time. That is one of the main reasons that I really enjoyed this book. It was my first real icky, gross, evil alien book so I didn't really know what to expect. Due to the very vivid writing, my history of alienology (if that's even a word) and my imagination it was like a movie in my head. Which was good for all the technology but not so good for the squishy killing parts.

Speaking of squishy things the aliens in this book were equally creepy and gross. They were like nothing I've ever heard of and it made me wonder where the author got the inspiration for them. They were big, clawed, purple, slimy things. When you shot them in a certain area these little green gremlin-like things shot out and tried to eat you. The only way to kill them was to dry out their slimy-ness, which made for interesting perfume and alcohol based weapons. So they were very hard to defeat and fun to read about.

My favorite thing about this book was definitely the characters. There was Sarabeth the loner who spends her time cooking and making lists of nevers, Evan the lonely church kid and baseball star, Teena the popular, shallow girl who was used to getting who and what she wanted and last but not least Leo the burn-out ladies man who was more than he seemed. They all came from very different lives and had different struggles and because of strange circumstances got locked in a basement together and ended up surviving because of it. I loved reading about them grow and bond despite everything while trying to survive and save everyone. I can't pick a favorite because they all had different qualities and goods and bads and were all relatable in their own way. I loved that they all got what (and who) they wanted.

This book made it seem almost fun to have your whole town abducted by aliens. They went on a crazy Toys r Us raid in toy cars and got weapons and whatever they wanted and had free reign and master key to a mall overnight. Can I do that minus the aliens?

Overall this book was a really fun ride. I loved how it perfectly mixed four teenagers trying to defeat a race of aliens in a quirky but action packed way. The ending was perfect and made it very easy to imagine a future for everyone. It would make an awesome movie. If you're in the mood for a great high stakes book or enjoy anything to do with aliens I would definitely recommend this.
